BBC 6 Music Saved (or perhaps promoted?)

When it was announced that BBC radio's 6 Music was being reviewed with a view to closing it down, there was a groundswell of online support from listeners and artists.

As a result, the audience figures rose dramatically (by 50%) as lapsed and new listeners started tuning in in large numbers.

This is a great example of the power of mobilising a passionate fanbase. For example, 180,000 people joined a Save 6 Music Facebook petition. Indeed, I was one of them.

A more cynical view is that threatening to take it away is also a great example of a PR move that gained 6 Music the best free advertising possible.

Surely not?
